Cigna HealthCare of Pennsylvania signed a new contract with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, officials said Tuesday. Cigna, which previously had a contract with UPMC, wants to expand its reach in Western Pennsylvania, said President Vince Sobocinski.
The insurer has about 70,000 members in the region. Officials would not disclose terms of the contract. The contract will give Cigna members access to all UPMC facilities and affiliated physicians, something that UPMC said will enhance competition among health insurers.
A spokesman said UPMC expects to announce similar agreements with other insurers.
