Defending Class AAA champion West Allegheny scored 21 second-quarter points, as it rolled to a 27-7 victory over Belle Vernon in a first-round playoff game Friday at West Allegheny.

After taking a 3-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Derek Javarone, the Indians (8-2) scored three times in the second quarter, two touchdowns coming less than a minute apart. The big play in the quarter was a 39-yard interception return by West Allegheny’s Joe Slappy.

Dave Hawkins put West Allegheny up 10-0 with a 2-yard run, then Dionte Henry scored on runs of 8 and 2 yards to give the Indians a 24-0 halftime lead.

Belle Vernon finishes the season at 5-5.

West Allegheny, trying to win its third consecutive Class AAA title and fourth in five years, will play Hampton (10-0) next week in the quarterfinals.

  • Hampton 17, New Castle 0 – Hampton advances to the quarterfinals, as it shutout New Castle (5-5). The Talbots (10-0), ranked No. 2 in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Coaches Poll but unseeded in the playoffs, will take on defending champion West Allegheny (8-2) in the quarterfinals. Ben Szelong and Brandon Rakszawski scored touchdowns for Hampton and Ryan Daniel opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal.
  • Blackhawk 27, Kittanning 21 (2OT) – Blackhawk went on the road and pulled off the upset, as it defeated Kittanning in a first-round contest. Blackhawk (6-4) will play the winner of tonight’s Derry-Thomas Jefferson game in the quarterfinals next week. Kittanning, which was ranked No. 4 in the Tribune-Review Coaches poll, finishes the season at 8-2.
