Clean up food programs

The liberal press do-gooders say hunger is a real problem in this country and more money and more programs will solve the problem. This is the wrong approach.

Food stamps were intended to provide adequate nutrition monthly. I see nothing wrong with that. However, there is much fraud in the food stamp program that the government should be eliminating. Instead, it is encouraging fraud.

Poor recipients with school-age children have a good thing going. Their children receive free school lunches and sometimes free breakfast. Now there is the “Blessings-in-the-Backpack” program in which elementary school students are given a backpack full of food so they don't go hungry over the weekend. Some communities have summer lunch programs for school-age children. Their parents have the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program. What are these parents doing with their food stamps?

I do realize that food stamp recipients might run low on other necessities like cigarettes, alcohol, lottery tickets, designer clothing, restaurant meals and illegal drugs. So parents sell their food stamps for cash. It is easy to defraud the program.

I believe food stamps have led to a new problem. Instead of hunger, too many people, including poor adults and children, are overweight or obese. We literally are killing them with kindness.

Only in America can a poor person be fat.
