PA CleanWays of Allegheny County announced today that it has changed its name to Allegheny CleanWays. The nonprofit organization that strives to “empower people to eliminate illegal dumping and littering” in the county, made the change to better distinguish it from the state PA CleanWays, of which Allegheny CleanWays is a member. The name of the county affiliate was “all too often abbreviated to PA CleanWays, which created more confusion with the state PA CleanWays organization,” said executive director Mary Wilson. “As a volunteer organization it is really critical that we distinguish ourselves from the head office in Greensburg.” Allegheny CleanWays also changed its logo to reflect the new name. The Allegheny County group was founded in 2000. This year alone, volunteers and partners removed more than 20.75 tons of debris, 550 tires, nearly three tons of scrap metal and 47 bags of other recyclables from local riverbanks, greenways, hillsides and vacant lots.
