Tuition at Carnegie Mellon University will increase by 3.2 percent this fall to $51,196 a year, a boost that when coupled with room and board and fees, bumps the sticker price of a year at the Oakland campus to more than $65,000.
Under the university's tiered undergraduate tuition program, incoming freshmen as well as those who entered since fall 2013 will pay the new rate. Those who entered in fall of 2012 will pay $50,690 a year under the tiered program.
Room and board for 2015-16 was set at $7,780 (standard double room) and $5,490 (standard first-year meal plan).
Additional student fees for all Pittsburgh students include a $180 transportation fee and a $400 technology fee. Undergraduate fees include a $254 activity fee and a $10 media fee. Incoming students are charged a $270 orientation fee.
The private research university, known for its fine arts, engineering and computer science programs, ranks among the most costly schools in the nation.
CMU's $63,495 price tag for undergraduate tuition, room and board and fees for 2015-16 was higher than the $60,659 price tag at Harvard and the $57,944 price tag at MIT.
The CMU tuition increases were made as the university continues work on a major campus building program.
CMU Vice President for Campus Affairs Michael Murphy announced the price increases in an email.
“We will continue making the institutional commitments that result in the highest quality student experience, both in and out of the classroom, studio and lab,” Murphy said. “In addition, we will maintain our commitment to raising funds, through presidential scholarships and fellowships and other initiatives, to be as supportive as possible with financial aid support for our students.”
