A Carnegie Mellon University professor who was charged with drunken driving three times in eight days has checked into a Virginia treatment center for alcoholism, his lawyer said today.
Because Jeffrey Hunker of Squirrel Hill will spend 28 days in treatment, an Allegheny County judge declined a request to put him in jail this morning.
Prosecutors sought to revoke the bond of Hunker, 51, who was arrested most recently on Sunday for drunken driving. He was also charged Aug. 17 and 19.
James Cirilano, Hunker's attorney, said the professor checked into Mt. Regis Center in Salem, Va., on Wednesday.
Assistant District Attorney Bob Linsenmayer said that Hunker was a danger to himself and the community but agreed that the Mt. Regis Center's program was sufficient as long as Hunker was off the streets.
Common Pleas Judge Anthony M. Mariani ordered Hunker not to drive as a condition of his bond. Hunker also must inform county officials when he completes the treatment program, provide documentation and submit to weekly urine screens to test for alcohol. Hunker may not consume alcohol, Mariani said.
Hunker drove through a neighbor's yard, ran over a small tree and hit another neighbor's house in the first arrest, police said.
