CMU unleashes its first mascot

Carnegie Mellon University has dubbed its mascot "Scotty" and given this Scottish terrier the task of making a school known for hard work a little more fun.

"I certainly think our students will work their hardest as they always do, and I do think that introducing a mascot to the university will help to promote the importance of having fun and that balance between work and having fun," said university spokeswoman Abby Houck.

The dog's name and costume were introduced Thursday during Spring Carnival. The name was chosen by a survey of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Appearing at the announcement was CMU's original mascot, Bob Beatty, an alumn originally from Natrona Heights who lives in Hilliard, Ohio.

University officials announced last month that comedian Bill Cosby was donating a Scottish terrier to the university. The dog will debut on campus this fall.

The new costume features a mascot with black fur wearing a kilt with a "sporran," a traditional Scottish leather purse.

What's under the kilt• you might ask.

"Lots of fur," Houck said.
