The Southwest Regional Police Department is adding a fourth Mon Valley municipality to its jurisdiction. Coal Center Borough Council voted Thursday to enter into a police-service agreement with Southwest’s board of directors. Terms of the agreement are still being finalized. However, under the agreement Coal Center will provide a substation in the borough to be used as part of the police operation. The Washington County community has 134 residents. Although there are some 1,300 police departments in Pennsylvania; only a handful — 34 — are regional forces. The Southwest Regional Police Department also covers Belle Vernon and Newell in Fayette County and Long Branch in Washington County.
