Most coffee shops are located in bigger cities where the majority of their clientele is, but Scottdale is fortunate to have it's very own coffee shop (complete with smoothies, cappuccino and chai) located on Broadway.

But, according to owner Caleb Johnson, coffee on its own is not enough to draw in the amount of business, so he has come up with a few bonuses to attract customers.

The most recent is the addition of a bed and breakfast to the coffee shop.

Johnson renovated a back room of the coffee shop where a family of four can sleep comfortably, and it's complete with a kitchenette.

"The kitchenette has a refrigerator and a sink and has basically everything a full sized kitchen would have except a range," said Johnson. "Breakfasts are light such as cereals, bagels and juice, and there's plenty of space."

It took Johnson and his parents just a little more than a month to do the renovations, and already interest has been shown. Johnson is currently charging $64 a night, whether one or four people stay in the room.

The other thing Johnson incorporated at his coffee shop to attract customers has been live performances.

"We've had various music artists come in and perform, and it's been mostly all acoustic and single acts and songwriters from the Pittsburgh area," said Johnson.

The artists work for tips and performing at the coffee shop gives them a chance to sell their CDs if they have made any.

"There's usually a pretty good turnout for entertainment," said Johnson. "It's just another way to get people in here."

On the refreshment end of things, Johnson added that the shop has a lot more to offer than just coffee.

"We have a refrigerator with cold drinks in it and we sell them for less than Sheetz," said Johnson. "We also have peach, mango, strawberry and kiwi smoothies, and that's probably our biggest thing right now."

Besides prepared cups of coffee, the shop also sells whole beans in 14 different flavors, with Mocha Java, Swiss Chocolate Almond and French Roast being among the most popular.

But if all that is not enough to draw a person to the shop, the architecture and decor might do the trick.

Complete with original hard wood flooring and pressed tin ceiling, the coffee shop is aesthetically pleasing. Other renovations done to the shop are also a thrill, complete with art hanging on the walls from local artists. It definitely has that coffee shop feel.

The biggest reason Johnson opened the coffee shop in Scottdale was because his parents, Don and Paula Johnson, own the building.

"Rent was not a problem and I couldn't have done it any other way," said Johnson, who added that he also had all the supplies he needed for a coffee shop from one of his parents' former businesses.

"This is what I'm into and I'm hoping it will bring people to the town," he said.

Johnson admitted that starting a new business is hard, but it's rewarding when people show interest.

"I've been making some efforts and sacrifices and although we've been open for nine months, I feel like I'm just getting started with things," he added. "It's always evolving in here."

Johnson is planning on making an effort to keep the coffee shop in town.

"I'm just trying to make something happen and it's an opportunity that people should take advantage of," he said.

The Scottdale Coffee Shop is opened Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. The entertainment starts at 8 p.m., after hours, on Saturday.
