Collection aims to give POWER for recovery
A Shadyside jewelry designer is launching a new collection to honor and benefit women recovering from addictions.
The POWER Collection — designed by Grace Moffett, owner of House of Silver in Shadyside — will debut at a reception on Thursday night. Moffett will donate 20 percent of the profits to Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery (POWER), a Point Breeze-based nonprofit that serves women with addictions in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Each of the 35 pieces in the POWER Collection — which includes pendants, bracelets and earrings with colored beading and sterling silver — includes a silver sunflower, which is a symbol of beauty, resilience and strength, says Rosa Davis, POWER executive director.
“That’s how we think of the women we work with, and women in general,” she says.
In pioneer days, Davis says, people often sprinkled sunflower seeds on their journeys, so that future travellers could find their way by following the sunflowers. Today’s women in recovery make a parallel journey, she says.
“Women who are becoming strong and healthy lead the way for women who want to begin the journey of recovery,” Davis says.
Moffett met some POWER leaders while they were shopping in her boutique a few years ago. Having substance abuse in her family, the Venezuela native says she was moved to tears when she learned about the organization’s mission.
“I think God put us both on the same path at the right time,” says Moffett. She has donated jewelry for the “POWER Promises” annual fashion-oriented fund-raiser, which will be on Nov. 10 this year.
Each piece in the POWER Collection can be duplicated, Moffett says, and will cost between $18 and $300. The reception will include entertainment by Latin Dance Palace and Azucar, two local performing troupes, and free refreshments will be provided by a few nearby eateries. The reception also includes a raffle for items — including jewelry and clothes — from Pittsburgh-area artists and stories.
