Collier residents now know how much they will be paying in real estate taxes this year.
The Collier Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to reduce the township's millage rate from 3.5 mills to 2.73 mills. This represents a 22 percent decrease in the millage rate, said Collier Manager Sal Sirabella.
The millage rate is retroactive to Jan. 1, Sirabella said. The board passed its $6.2 million budget in December.
The millage decrease — and the fact that the commissioners chose to wait until after the beginning of the year to vote on it — is not a surprise.
The millage in Collier, Sirabella said, decreased because of the Allegheny County assessment process. In December, Allegheny County Senior Common Pleas Judge Stanton Wettick ruled that all county municipalities have until the end of this month to set their 2013 budgets, and until 10 days before they mail tax bills to set millage rates.
