Colombian authorities say they foiled another attempt to assassinate President Alvaro Uirbe, El Tiempo reported Monday.

According to police, two suspected members of the Marxist Revoltionary Armed Forces of Colombia were arrested in Cartagena with a large amount of explosives they allegedly planned to use in firing a mortar at Uribe's plane.

There have been nearly a dozen attempts on the Colombian president's life since he assumed office in 2002.

Colombia has been battling with leftist rebel groups for 40 years.
