Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania expects to begin replacing a half-mile of natural gas pipeline in Carrick this week, the company said Monday.

The $534,000 project will require temporary service interruptions to 85 customers along Parkfield Street between Brownsville Road and Copperfield Avenue. Crews will conduct the work between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. The company said in an email it expects the work to end in early fall.

The project is part of $144 million Columbia has spent so far this year to upgrade aging infrastructure, a problem affecting every gas utility in the state. A Tribune-Review investigation, The Invisible Threat , found that some gas companies won’t remove the last of their highest-risk pipe — made of bare, unprotected steel and cast iron — for decades.
