Classes/programs

  • The Latrobe Senior Center announces the following events for the month: Nutrition program on Wednesday; "Stars & Stripes Forever" event on May 25; wear you patriotic shirt.   • A program on rogues and rascals in Pennsylvania history will be presented at 6 p.m. Monday at Adams Memorial Library, Latrobe. Dr. Alan Irvine, Pennsylvania commonwealth speaker, professional storyteller and professor of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh, will bring to life these spies, thieves and the "wickedest man on earth." This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.   • These technology camps for girls ages 11-14 are planned at the YWCA of Westmoreland County, 424 N. Main St., Greensburg:

  • The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley will offer these summer art camps for ages 5-12:

    -- Arts Across America, June 19-30, explores the nation's cultural heritage through the art, music and dance of different regions, including New Orleans, Texas and Hawaii.

    -- The Art of Puppet Theatre, July 17-28, teaches theatrical techniques, scenery and costume design through puppetry and culminates with a children's puppet theater production.

  • Alabaster Productions will offer a solo artist performance and recording camp for ages 5-18 June 19-23 in Ligonier.   • Greater Latrobe School District varsity football and cheerleading staffs will hold a camp at the senior high school practice field July 10-13 from 6 to 8:15 p.m. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 7 through 13 who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved in football and cheerleading. All participants will receive a T-shirt as well as snacks each evening. Cost is $25. Proceeds benefit the Unity Township and Latrobe Midget Football and Cheerleading programs.     Open houses

  • Sacred Heart School in Youngstown is holding an open house for parents who are school shopping from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday. The open house will include a visit to the classroom of interest, a presentation on the school, information on tuition awards and scholarships that are available and an opportunity to meet with parents of current students.   • Latrobe Presbyterian Church, 428 Main St., Latrobe, will hold a bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Vogelsang Room (parking off Depot Street). A huge flea market is planned as well as books, baked goods and lunch. Proceeds will benefit the local food bank.

  • All men of the area are invited to a Community Breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1325 Mission Road (Lawson Heights) in Latrobe. Pastor Paul Poerschke, from St. James Lutheran Church in Ligonier, will present a power-point program about his experiences working in the Mississippi area after Hurricane Katrina and information about what still needs to be done.     Camps

  • A Computer Day Camp designed especially for girls entering grades seven to 10 will be offered by the St. Vincent College Department of Computing and Information Science June 13-14 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Classes and demonstrations will be conducted in the department's laboratory on Dell computers that use the Windows operating system. All classes and demonstrations will be taught by St. Vincent College faculty or by professional women working in the discipline. Cost of the camp is $30 for both days including lunch, snack, instructional materials and use of available St. Vincent recreational facilities during breaks. Camp size is limited to 18 participants, who will learn how to do essential file manipulations in the Windows operating system, design and create their own Web pages using HTML programming language, learn about Visual BASIC programming, design and manipulate their own database using Microsoft ACCESS and be part of a computer crime scene investigation.   • Two Loyalhanna United youth soccer camps are scheduled for June 14-16 and Aug. 9-11. Camp times are from 10 a.m. to noon each day. The camps offer games and activities for 5 to 9 year olds. The camp encourages fitness, agility and soccer skills development. The coaching director for this camp is nationally licensed by the United States Soccer Federation to work with recreational and competitive soccer players. All activities will be held at the Loyalhanna Soccer Park on Bethel Church Road. The registration deadline for the June camp is May 26. The August camp registration deadline is July 21.   • Shooting Stars Basketball Camp will be held July 25-28, at the Greater Latrobe Senior High School gym. This camp, held by the Wildcat coaching staff and players, is open to youth ages 8 through 13. Camp times are 10 to 11:45 a.m. for ages 8 to 10 and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for ages 11 to 13. Shooting Stars is devoted exclusively to teaching fundamental skills. Youth will receive individual instruction in each of the following: ball-handling skills, running the fast break, taking the ball to the hoop, footwork and proper shooting technique.   • Sacred Heart Parish in Youngstown will hold a "Celebration of Music" on May 21 at 3 p.m. The program, coordinated by the Rev. William Beaver, O.S.B., will be in honor of Sister Mary Celine, CSSF, the first principal of Sacred Heart School. Music will be provided by The Heartbeat Chorale of Sacred Heart under the direction of Linda Bruening, director of music of Sacred Heart Parish; Outreach Glory, directed by David Napoli, director of faith formation, St. Paul Parish; God's Anointed under the direction of Glenn Buzzard.   • The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County will play host to a Celebration of Local Philanthropy 6 p.m. May 23 at Seton Hill University, Greensburg.   • Father Fest, an event celebrating the importance of dads in the family and community, is planned June 17-18 at parks throughout Westmoreland County. Sponsors are ParentWISE and Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Alliance.   • The Pennsylvania Plastics Initiative Scholarship Program provides awards of $2,500 per semester, up to $10,000, to associate-degree students majoring in plastics and polymer technology at Pennsylvania College of Technology and plastics engineering technology at Penn State Erie. Awards are prorated for part-time students. Applicants must be state residents demonstrating financial need who intend to work in the Pennsylvania plastics industry after graduation. Scholarship is automatically renewed with demonstrated academic progress and cumulative 2.5 GPA.   • Legislation is before Congress to provide Merchant Marine veterans of World War II with lifetime tax-free monthly benefits of $1,000, which could be transferred to a surviving spouse upon the mariner's death.
