I am appalled at the support the Confederate flag receives from letter writers in this newspaper. You would have to defy all logic and reason to create a scenario in which the flag doesn't represent hatred and bigotry.
The Confederate flag represented a government that supported the institution of slavery in its constitution. Read that again. It simply cannot be argued.
To play apologist and say anything to the contrary further marginalizes and belittles the struggle of black Americans, something that's been ignored and marginalized enough throughout our nation's history.
And while we're on the subject of the unrecognized Confederate States of America, don't fool yourself into thinking the Civil War wasn't fought over slavery. It was. Again, the Confederate constitution protected slavery across all Confederate states.
Such a federal mandate surely seems at odds with the very idea of states' rights. Read up on the Kansas-Nebraska Act to see just what “states' rights” Kansas bled over.
