It’s Christmas in Connellsville.
Today, Greater Connellsville Chamber of Commerce today is hosting its Christmas in the Park at Yough Park, beginning at noon. At 6 p.m., New Haven Hose Company will sponsor the annual Christmas parade.
And, the city’s Christmas tree has arrived. The tree was donated by local residents John and Rhonda Brooks.
The city invites local children at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 3 to decorate the tree at City Plaza. Put up earlier this week, the tree sits in front of City Hall.
“We are asking all the children to make handmade ornaments to bring with them,” said Shelley Primus, administrative secretary for the city of Connellsville. “They will make the ornaments at home and bring it with them here to put on the tree.”
Primus encourages residents to make extra ornaments, in case a child shows up without one. All ornaments should not be breakable.
About 60 children visited City Hall to decorate the tree last year, Primus said.
“They were happy,” she said. “One child couldn’t make it with his class here, so his mother brought him later to place an ornament on the tree. He was thrilled.”
Primus said the children will enjoy decorating their hometown tree and meeting Mayor Greg Lincoln and having their picture taken.
“It’s a huge opportunity for a child to remember,” Primus said.
“I’m really excited to have kids come down to City Hall and decorate the city’s Christmas tree,” Lincoln said, thanking Primus for taking the idea, running with it and getting the word out.
“We already have so many people offering donations and help,” the mayor said.
Primus said she expects Santa Claus at the tree-decorating and hopes people will donate candy or snacks or even small toys and candy canes for the children.
“I’d like to ask residents, groups or businesses to stop by to watch, lend a hand or donate an item,” Primus said.
Primus said she hopes the attendance will create a community holiday event.
“I would think this would not last more than an hour, but let’s make this hour one our children will remember,” she said.
