Connellsville residents reminded about $10 per capita tax

Connellsville City Treasurer Judy Keller reminded residents this week that the annual $10 per capita tax is separate from any income tax due the state or the federal government.

This tax is also separate from property taxes assessed by the city, the Connellsville Area School District and Fayette County.

Passed by council ordinance several decades ago, the per capita or "head" tax applies to any Connellsville resident 18 or older who has an annual income of $5,000 or more from all sources, including retirement and disability payments.

Keller told council that the tax office works to maintain current per capita tax lists. She said it's an ongoing process to keep resident lists correct.

In early 2010, 3,420 residents 18 and older earned $5,000 or more annually and were subject to the tax. By the end of the year, 3,594 were on the per capita list.

This year, Keller said 3,653 people made the per capita list, but the tax office has already deleted 111, because they have left the city.

She suggested council examine the per capita ordinance and perhaps raise the income for qualification.

Anyone who pays their city taxes by April 30 will receive a 2 percent discount. The discount applies to both per capita and property taxes.
