Canada’s Conservatives are the most popular party in the country but still lack enough support to form a majority. Environics Research, which conducted its survey for the CBC, found that Stephen Harper’s Conservatives are supported by 33 percent of Canadians, the CBC said Friday. Paul Martin’s Liberals, who currently lead a minority government, trail Harper with 27 percent support. Jack Layton’s New Democratic Party is in third place with 24 percent, followed by the Bloc Quebecois of Gilles Duceppe with 11 percent support, nationally. “What really struck me is the big drop in Liberal support in a very short period,” said Donna Dasko of Environics. “They have gone from the mid-30s, even the high-30s, in support to down to the high-20s in our poll.” The poll of 1,200 Canadians was conducted April 11-13. No error margin was provided. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
