The Pittsburgh Department of Public Works must do a better job of inventorying equipment, according to a controller's audit released Tuesday.
City Controller Michael Lamb, whose office reviewed the department's inventory from Jan. 1, 2012 to Aug. 1, 2013, found 12 pieces of light equipment missing from the Division 3 headquarters in Oakland.
Lamb said auditors found no evidence of theft, and he suspects the equipment was probably old and decommissioned. Light equipment includes tools worth $100 or more.
The audit found the department is not consistently tracking equipment after it is purchased.
He recommends the appointment of an inventory officer to do regular tracking and guard against theft.
Public Works has 1,748 pieces of equipment, including 876 vehicles and 872 tools.
