Convicted killer Richard Cartwright was executed Thursday in Texas for the 1996 robbery and murder of a Corpus Christi man. Cartwright was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m. after receiving a lethal injection for the murder of Nick Moraida during a robbery that netted between $60 and $200. In his final statement, Cartwright thanked his friends and family for their support. “I want to apologize to the victim’s family for the pain I caused them,” he said. “And to everyone at the Polunsky Unit (death row), just keep you heads up and stay strong.” Cartwright and two accomplices lured Moraida to a park in Corpus Christi and robbed him of his wallet, watch and money, according to court records. Cartwright shot him in the back with a .38 caliber pistol after one of the other men stabbed him. The two accomplices were sentenced to long prison terms. Cartwright was the eighth convicted killer executed this year in Texas. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
