Eric Heyl seems to be upset that our polic department has a wage scale that permits its officers to live a decent life and raise a family (" City police making out like a band of thieves ," June 4).

I wonder, does Mr. Heyl wear body armor to the office• Does he perhaps regularly respond to and assist at violent crimes, automobile accidents, etc.

When he leaves for work, does his family wonder if he will come that day• The point of these questions being this: Does Eric Heyl believe that the men and women who risk their life and health for the citzens of Pittsburgh do not deserve to be paid a fair wage• And if he does not, Why•

The abuse leveled at our police department by some members of the community and politicians is a disgrace. That Heyl uses humor and sarcasm to attack these men and women is as well.

Why doesn't Heyl question the salaries in the Public Works Department, school district, etc., where I would guarantee salaries equal to or well above those of the police department. The bureaus of public safety (police, fire , and paramedics) are the only departments that citizens really truly can rely on.

I personally want my police officers to be paid well. They do a thankless job day in and day out, and the only ones I hear complaining are those I wouldn't associate with and newspaper columnists. Funny Eric, isn't it•
