Cornell coach misses Greensburg Salem's Matthews
Greensburg Salem fans had to adjust their travel plans Monday after the boys basketball game against Laurel Highland was postponed by another snowfall.
One fan, though, had driven a little farther than others.
Cornell University assistant coach Nat Graham was already en route from Ithaca, N.Y. to Greensburg when the decision was made Monday to postpone the Section 3-AAA game. In fact, Graham was just 50 miles from Greensburg in a drive that normally takes five hours.
"I feel awful; I might have to take him out for dinner," Greensburg Salem coach Paul Sapotichne said. "We called him as soon as we knew."
Graham was coming to see senior guard Jake Matthews, who has signed to play at Cornell.
Ultimately, Graham decided to bypass Greensburg Salem and go to another high school basketball game in the area, Sapotichne said, so he wasn't around for dinner.
"We felt bad that he drove all that way," Matthews said.
The game was supposed to be senior night at Greensburg Salem, and despite the postponement, the seniors held scaled-down festivities.
