Although she is only in eighth grade, Stephanie Krakowski of Mt. Lebanon is well on her way to becoming a member of the “Western World Is Evil Club” (“Chris Columbus, murderer,” Oct. 12). Since she has approached the subject with an anti-West, politically correct slant, she should take a closer look at the facts before believing everything her teachers tell her. She wants us to believe that the Native Americans wanted to be friendly and Columbus did not. The fact is that many Native Americans were not friendly or peaceful. They practiced much violence of their own. Lifting scalps wasn’t exactly a gesture of friendship. If Miss Krakowski is striving to achieve political correctness, she must also incorporate tolerance, sensitivity and diversity into her way of thinking. Maybe poor Chris Columbus was misguided and confused. In those days, after all, there were no anger management or diversity acceptance classes to help him work out his aggressions.
