Three Westmoreland County high schools have been recognized among the best in the nation.
Greater Latrobe, Ligonier Valley and Penn-Trafford all received silver medals in the U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools 2013 rankings, which are based on college readiness.
“It's a reflection of all of the hard work and efforts” from staff, students and parents, said Penn-Trafford High School Principal Scott Inglese.
The rankings are based on an analysis of state proficiency test scores in 2010-11 by the magazine and Washington-based American Institutes for Research.
Schools were given medal rankings — gold, silver or bronze — which are based on three steps:
• Whether each school's students were performing better than the average student in the state.
• Whether the school's least-advantaged students were performing better than average for their peers in the state.
• Schools that passed the first two steps were judged on Advanced Placement test scores to determine college readiness.
