Cross Creek County Park to change hours

Cross Creek County Park hours will change Oct. 27.

Winter hours, through the first Sunday in April, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, according to Jeffrey Donahue, a representative of the Washington County Department of Parks & Recreation.

Under park policy, boats must be off the water and out of the park by 5 p.m. Gates will be locked at 5 p.m.

Green Tree

Mercy SmartHealth Outpatient Center will offer tests that promote bone health in mid-November at its south location, 100 Fleet Street in Green Tree.

A Vitamin D blood test, also known as a 25-OH test, along with a bone density screening and a posture screening, will be done from noon to 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14, and from 8 a.m. to noon Nov.16.

The cost is $25 per person for all three tests. Payment by cash or personal check is expected at the person's appointment time, which must be made in advance.

  • Traffic on Interstate 279, Parkway West, will be restricted to one lane in each direction between the Green Tree and Carnegie exits from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

    During these work hours, Surface Preparations Technology Inc. will place milled shoulder strips along the roadway.

    Castle Shannon

    Ken Kaszak, a local investment banker and writer, will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Castle Shannon Library, 3677 Myrtle Ave., Castle Shannon.

    Also, Kaszak will discuss his new book, "How the Investment Business Really Works" and a supplement, "Going Forward: What Each Investor Needs To Know." Both will be available for sale at a 20 percent discount.

    Moon

    Sign-up days for Moon Parks and Recreation Winter Basketball League are 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the municipal building, 1000 Beaver Grade Road.

    The league is designed to develop and enhance dribbling, passing and shooting skills. It is open to boys and girls in third through eighth grade.

    Mt. Lebanon

    Medical Rescue Team South Authority is offering three cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes in November.

    Healthcare CPR will be taught on Nov. 7. The fee is $45. Adult CPR will be taught on Nov. 18 and Infant/Child CPR will be taught on Nov. 19. The fee for each of these classes is $30.

    All classes will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the authority's conference center at 315 Cypress Way.

    Discounts are available for those who wish to take a combination of these classes.

    South Fayette

    The township has arranged for free curbside leaf collection on Oct. 26, Nov. 9 and Nov. 16.

    Leaves and other yard waste must be placed in tightly sealed, biodegradable bags that weigh less than 25 pounds.

    Waste Management Inc. will pick up leaves and haul them to a leaf recycling plant.

    Officials still encourage residents to make compost piles and remind them that leaf burning is prohibited in the township.

    Arden

    The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum is the recipient of nearly $130,000 in grants for preserving and interpreting Pennsylvania's "trolley era."

    The museum was awarded two general-operating support grants — $112,500 from the Institute of Museum & Library Services, and $15,000 from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission's Pennsylvania History and Museum Grant Program.

    The institute grant will be used to staff visitor services and to pay for contracted labor in the trolley-restoration shop. Only 179 museums received the funding, although 839 applied this year, according to Scott Becker, executive director for the museum.

    The historical-commission grant will help cover costs by the program staff. The grant is funded by appropriations from the Pennsylvania General Assembly and approved by the governor.

    The museum, across from the Washington County Fairgrounds, offers trolley rides on restored trolleys. It also hosts exhibits, a film and holiday events. The site also has a picnic area.

    Peters

    Flu shots will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 6 at Peters Township Community Room, 610 E. McMurray Road.

    People ages 60 and older, as well as spouses of those older than 60, are eligible.

    Washington

    Depression and skills to cope with life-threatening illnesses will be presented at free talks Nov. 20 and Dec. 1 at Washington Hospital.

    Sessions will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the hospital's third floor. A medical professional will conduct each program, which will include a brief video related to the topic. A question-and-answer session will follow.

    The sessions are:

    Nov. 20: "When Someone Has a Life-Threatening Illness" by Dr. Anna Allan, a resident of family practice at Washington Hospital.

    Dec. 1: "Depression," by Dr. Bob Phares, a resident of family practice at Washington Hospital.

    The free lectures are sponsored by Washington Hospital's Ruth York Morgan Health Education Learning Place (HELP). Kathie Allen will host the lectures.

    HELP, which started in March, offers access to a variety of publications, videos and Web-based information. People can find information about specific diseases, chronic conditions, treatments, drugs and other health topics. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

    Washington

    Marilyn A. Posner of Washington has been named president of the Andrew Carnegie Society at Carnegie Mellon University.

    Founded in 1972, the society is open to all alumni and friends who give $1,000 or more during the university's fiscal year and who work to encourage investing in the future of the Oakland campus.

    Posner, the second woman to hold office in the group's 30 years, will serve a two-year term on the university's board of trustees. She graduated from CMU in 1968 and has been on the society's executive board for two years. She also has been the group's communications director and editor of its biannual newsletter.

    She is married to David S. Posner, a 1967 graduate of CMU.
