Australian actor Russell Crowe says he is a "messy, psychologically damaged weirdo."

The Oscar winner told Australia's Channel 9 Sunday the phone throwing incident in New York that ended with his arrest on felony assault charges in June was "stupid," the Melbourne Herald Sun reported Sunday.

"I am obviously a complicated, messy, psychologically damaged weirdo and that is the fundamental requirement for my job," Crowe said. "It's an unfortunate thing that people don't simply understand that and leave me to my padded cell."

Crowe also said he does bare sole responsibility for the New York incident, allegedly sparked after he could not reach an outside telephone line to call his wife in Australia.

"It was a stupid thing to do but one doesn't dance alone," he said.
