Cumberland County man charged in Fayette road rage incident
A man from central Pennsylvania allegedly struck another man with his vehicle then dragged him a short distance during a confrontation in Fayette County.
A 2003 Saturn Vue driven by Douglas Wayne Vought, 51, of New Cumberland, Cumberland County, tapped the rear of a Uniontown man’s vehicle three times about 5:30 p.m. Saturday at a traffic signal at the intersection of routes 40 and 119 in South Union, state police at Uniontown said.
The victim, a 58-year-old Uniontown man, got out of his vehicle, saw the two vehicles were touching and approached Vought to tell him what had happened, authorities said.
Vought denied he struck the other vehicle, then put his sport utility vehicle into reverse and attempted to drive into the other lane of traffic and around the victim’s vehicle, Trooper Kristen Zelechowski said.
The Uniontown man stood in front of Vought and told him not to leave, according to the affidavit.
“(Vought) then put his vehicle in drive, and the victim slammed his fist onto the hood of (Vought’s SUV),” the affidavit states. “(Vought) then struck the victim with his vehicle, causing the victim to fall to the ground, causing injuries.”
The victim got up and leaned into the driver-side window of Vought’s SUV. He grabbed the steering wheel and attempted to remove the keys from the ignition, police said.
Vought drove his car forward, dragging the victim a short distance, authorities said. The victim removed the keys, stopping Vought’s vehicle. But Vought grabbed spare keys out of the glove compartment, hit the accelerator, and the Uniontown man let go of the steering wheel and fell to the ground, police said.
Authorities said they found Vought crouched in the back seat of his vehicle in a parking area outside a hotel on West Main Street in Uniontown.
They described him in court papers as having glassy and bloodshot eyes and smelling of alcohol. Vought refused to let medical personnel draw blood to determine his blood-alcohol content, police said.
At the accident scene, the victim was bleeding from his knees and had abrasions, scratches and other marks on both arms, police said. He was taken for medical treatment.
Vought remains in the Fayette County Prison on $10,000 bond. He is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, driving under the influence, reckless endangerment and related counts.
