The Carlynton School District is getting its first full-time curriculum director, who will present an outline of a plan for the district's academics on July 16.
Adrienne P. Lancaster was named to the position at a special voting meeting of the board earlier this month and is to officially start work for the district on July 15.
Lancaster comes to the district from a director's position at Intermediate Unit 1 based in California, Washington County. The agency provides special education and other services for students in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties.
At Carlynton, she will earn $80,000 a year, plus benefits.
In the past, the Carlynton district has had teachers fill the role of curriculum coordinator, on a supplemental contract basis. But often the positions weren't filled in all subject areas.
School officials said some of the duties in the new position include monitoring students' achievement through assessment, guiding the teaching process, continuing the realignment of curriculum with state standards and leading professional development initiatives.
The Carlynton district had 1,674 students last school year from Carnegie, Crafton and Rosslyn Farms.
With Lancaster's hiring, Carlynton becomes one of the 40 school districts in Allegheny County that employ a curriculum director. The county has a total of 42 districts.
Lancaster is to be introduced to the public at the July 16 board meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the junior-senior high school.
The school board also is to meet Tuesday night to give final approval to a $19.6 million budget for 2002-03. The tax rate would be 21.9 mills, a slight decrease from the current year.
The budget includes the first stage of a major technology upgrade for the schools, but leaves nine professional positions — mostly teachers — vacant through attrition. There now are 108 professional employees.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the junior-senior high building.
