Daily Courier roundup: Connellsville volleyball earns shutout win
Kristen Domer had 21 digs, and Abby Stouffer recorded 20 digs and six aces to lead the Connellsville girls volleyball team to a 3-0 win in Section 1-AAA against Franklin Regional.
Payton Hileman tallied nine kills for the Falcons, who improved to 5-2 in section play.
Carmichaels 3, Geibel 1 — Alyssa Hutchinson collected three aces, two blocks and 16 kills for Geibel but it was not enough as the Gators (3-5, 2-5) fell in Section 5-A action. Abbey Sitko chipped in three aces and 11 digs, and Morgan DeWitt had 21 digs for Geibel.
Frazier 3, California 0 — Miranda Schepler racked up 20 service points to fuel Frazier to a Section 5-A victory.
Hannah Fell tallied 14 kills, and Kelsey Holp had 15 digs for the Commodores. Alexus Eicher added 11 digs and four kills in the win.
The Chartiers-Houston boys swept a Section 3-AA tri-meet by defeating Burgettstown, 20-32, California, 19-42, and Frazier, 43-20. On the girls side, California tallied 15-50 wins over Chartiers-Houston, Burgettstown and Frazier.
• The Indiana girls cross country team topped Shady Side Academy, 20 41, and Southmoreland, 26-33, in a Section 4-AA tri-meet. Shady Side Academy defeated Southmoreland, 28-31, in third leg of the meet. The Indiana boys used 15-26 scores to power past Southmoreland and Shady Side Academy. Shady Side Academy won 15-50 over Southmoreland.
Southmoreland 3, Greensburg Salem 1 — Isaac Baker scored twice to fuel Southmoreland (7- 4, 6-3) to its third consecutive Section 1-AA win.
Connor Jobe scored the lone goal for Greensburg Salem (8-3, 7-2).
Southmoreland 6, Brownsville 4 — Vayda Farino headed in two goals, each off corner kicks from Olivia Porter, to propel Southmoreland (6-4, 4-3) to a nonsection win. Porter also scored two goals and Jenna Conte and Maddie Bodenhiemer each scored for the Scotties.
Armstrong 5, Connellsville 0 — The tandem of Kendra Hale and Jamie Crissman won their doubles match in straight sets to help lead Armstrong to a Section 1-AAA win.
Meg Toy and Breanna McGaughey also paired up to win in straight sets for the River Hawks.
Ashleigh Bowser, Lauren Virostek and Lindsey Moore each earned singles victories to complete the sweep.
Greensburg Central Catholic5, Mt. Pleasant 0 — The trio of Marlayna Verenna, Kate Bryan and Keeley Maloney each earned hard-fought singles victories to help Greensburg Central Catholic (9-2, 6-2) net a Section 1-AA win.
Kate Fives and Lexi Vittone and Kaleigh Muko and Holly Reagan won in doubles to shutout Mt. Pleasant (8-4, 7-3).
Southmoreland 4, California1 — Kate Walch, Monique Lepre and Samantha Lauffer each earned wins in singles competition to propel Southmoreland (5-7, 3-5) to the Section 1-AA victory.
Sisters Elisa Proch and Hannah Proch won in straight sets to give Southmoreland a doubles victory. Sierra Jones and Hayley Robbins earned California’s only point with a doubles win.
