Daily Courier roundup: Four Southmoreland wrestlers win individual titles at Burgettstown Invitational
Tyler Griffiths (106 pounds), Cole Lambie (113), Evan Myers (138) and Jake Beistel (heavyweight) each brought home individual championships for Southmoreland on Saturday at the Burgettstown Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
Griffiths scored a 6-2 decision over Elizabeth Forward's Alex Lukart in the finals. Lambie won a 12-3 major decision over Freedom's Chase Komara in the championship bout. Myers pinned California's James Campbell in the first period of the finals. Beistel won a 13-3 major decision over Burgettstown's James Reedy in the championship.
Jaden Datz (152) finished second. Anthony Wise (126) and Brennan Coles (170) garnered a third-place finish each. Jake Virgin (132) and Colton Zundel (145) were fifth-place finishers.
Burgettstown won the tournament with 195 points. The Scotties finished second with 186.
NAHL hockey
Keystone 3, Johnstown 1 — Austin Romzek, Jacob Coleman and Matt Jones scored a goal each as the Ice Miners (19-5-3) completed a two-game sweep of Johnstown (16-16-4) at home Saturday. The Ice Miners have won three in a row and seven of their past eight games. Keystone pulled into a second-place tie in the North Division with Soo (41 points).
Romzek scored a second-period goal before Johnstown's Casey Linkenheld tied the game with a goal early in the third period. Jacob Coleman scored the game-winner with more than three minutes left in regulation. Matt Jones added an empty-net goal to seal the win.
Vito Aluia, Lucas Little, LordAnthony Grissom, Noah Batis and Taylor Fernandez had an assist each for Keystone. Dalton Hunter and Joe Drabin assisted on Linkenheld's goal.
Alex Blankenburg made 37 saves for Keystone. Ryan Bednard stopped 37 shots in the loss for the Tomahawks.
Men's basketball
Penn State Fayette 99, Penn State Schuylkill 67 — Brandon Cunningham scored a game-high 22 points, and Matt McKenna had 21 points and 17 rebounds as the Lions (12-3, 8-0) continued their unbeaten streak in conference play Saturday. Sean Smoggie tallied 21 points, Jacob Bronder had 15, and Dominic Jackson scored 13 points for Penn State Fayette.
Benioko Harris led Penn State Schuylkill with 16 points. William Bracey had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Genaro Epifano scored 11 points.
Women's basketball
Penn State Fayette 70, Penn State Schuylkill 68 — Courtney Haines and Hayley Moreland scored 14 points each, and Kaitlin Miller pulled down 16 rebounds in the Lions' (5-9, 5-1) win Saturday in PSAC play.
Ally Rudolph and Kelsey Laurine scored 13 points each.
Tessa Dolce led Penn State Schuylkill with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Caitria Bowen and Samantha Cook followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Diving
North Allegheny Invitational — Connellsville divers Luke Kisiel and Jordan Hosfelt placed sixth and 21st, respectively, at the North Allegheny Invitational on Saturday.
Swimming
Mt. Pleasant vs. Freeport, East Allegheny — The Mt. Pleasant girls swim team improved to 5-4 with a win over Freeport and East Allegheny on Tuesday. The Vikings finished with 128 points, followed by Freeport (110) and East Allegheny (66).
The Mt. Pleasant boys swimmers fell to 4-5. Freeport picked up the win with 110 points, followed by Mt. Pleasant (101) and East Allegheny (70).
