The Dallas police officer who captured Lee Harvey Oswald after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has died at age 76. M.N. “Nick” McDonald died Thursday of complications of diabetes at National Park Medical Center in Hot Springs, Ark., The Dallas Morning News reported. McDonald was dispatched to the Oak Cliff section of Dallas after the assassination Nov. 22, 1963 to pursue Oswald, who was missing from his job at the Texas School Book Depository. Oswald was also wanted in the fatal shooting of Officer J.D. Tippit shortly after the assassination. Witnesses led officers to the Texas Theater where Oswald was captured. In a 1988 interview, McDonald said when he approached Oswald he told him to stand up and he said, “Well, it’s all over now.” Oswald struck him in the face and pulled a gun, as they struggled. He grabbed the pistol to keep it from firing. McDonald retired from the Dallas police in 1980 after 25 years and returned to his native Arkansas. Survivors include his wife, Rose Daisy McDonald, of Hot Springs, two daughters, three stepdaughters, three grandchildren, and three stepgrandchildren. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
