Although you can buy a hoagie anywhere in the country, customers of Danny’s Pizza & Hoagies customers swear by the eatery’s Italian hoagie so much that many people who move out of the area order the hoagies through the mail, and get the sandwich’s ingredients delivered overnight.
It must be the Danny’s homemade Italian dressing, says owner Daniel Rowsick. The delicious dressing flavors the Italian hoagie — with five types of imported Italian meats — along with several of the other oven-baked hoagies in half ($4.50 to $5.30) and whole ($9 to $10.60) portions, along with the eatery’s garden salads ($3.75 to $7.95).
Danny’s, with two South Hills locations, must be doing something right, because the first store opened in Bethel Park some 54 years ago, Rowsick says. His parents, Daniel Sr. and Anna Rowsick, started the business, where he worked as a child after school, and took over as an adult. Now, Rowsick personally opens both locations — the Bethel Park store, and the satellite Baldwin store that opened in the ’70s — most mornings.
“It got to be … a family thing,” says Rowsick, 59, who lives on a farm with Tennessee Walker horses in Eighty Four, Washington County.
Danny’s bakes fresh dough and other recipes every day, and uses a lot of local ingredients, Rowsick says. Danny’s does not deliver, but offers casual dine-in and carryout.
“We strive on providing and serving the freshest product with the highest quality,” he says.
The most popular Danny’s items, besides the Italian hoagie, is the square pizza, which is served during dinner hours after 4 p.m. Single slices are $1.15, and a 24-slice tray is $24.95. Danny’s also makes New York pizza with triangular slices in small ($7.75), medium ($9.50), large ($11.75) and grande ($12.95.) Specialty pizzas — with deluxe, piasano, veggie, Southern steak and fresh Buffalo-chicken options — come in small ($11.99), medium ($14.99), large (18.99) and x-large ($19.99).
Other items on the Danny’s menu include calzones ($9.99 to $11.99), which comes in Sicilian, garden, Italian hot sausage and meatball versions. Danny’s also offers chicken options, with chicken supreme sandwiches, Buffalo chicken sandwiches, and others for a price range of $5.05 to $10.60. Popular “tummy teaser” appetizers include sweet-potato fries with cinnamon sugar ($2.99 to $3.99), jumbo-cut gourmet wings ($7.99), and buttermilk ranch fries ($3.39 to $4.39).
Every Friday, Danny’s hosts a fish fry with a hand-battered cod loin sandwich for $7.50, or $9 with fries and cole slaw.
Danny’s has earned several Trib Total Media Readers Choice Awards, including the Neighborhood Award this year.
