Deer Lakes softball edges Freeport Winning pitcher Samantha Colton knocked in Jodi Walsh for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Deer Lakes slipped by Freeport, 5-4, on Monday in a Section 3-AA game. Deer Lakes improved to 7-4 overall and 6-3 in section and moved into a tie for third place with Freeport, which slipped to 6-5, 6-3. The top three finishers in each section will reach the WPIAL playoffs. Walsh scored after Colton's groundball was misplayed by the shortstop. Colton struck out 10 batters. Freeport's Brittany Showers struck out 12 in the loss. Saltsburg 4, Elderton 2 - At Elderton, Shauna Walker and Hope Stear each doubled in a run for Class A Elderton (7-5) in a losing cause against Class AA Saltsburg. Baseball Freeport 5, Valley 3 - At Valley, Josh Schreckengost was 2 for 4 with three RBI to lead Freeport (6-6, 3-5) past Valley (3-5, 2-3) in a Section 3-AA. Freeport pitcher Justin Bollinger pitched six innings and allowed 11 hits. Track and field The Apollo-Ridge boys have returned to the WPIAL team track and field playoffs for the first time since 1994. Apollo-Ridge finished second in Section 7-AA with a record of 7-2. The Vikings are 8-3 overall under first-year coach Josh Lipkin. "I'm really proud of my kids," Lipkin said. "The thing is, when I took the job and looked at the schedule and last year's results, I said, 'This team is not that far off.' " All first-round meets will start at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Apollo-Ridge will face Brentwood, McGuffey and host Southmoreland.
