Deer Lakes nabs No. 4 seed in Class AA
Three of the six Alle-Kiski Valley baseball qualifiers landed top-six seeds in the WPIAL playoffs, which are set to begin Tuesday.
Deer Lakes (12-4) is seeded No. 4 in Class AA, while Section 4 foes Kiski Area (12-3) and Plum (13-4) are Nos. 5 and 6, respectively in Quad A.
Deer Lakes, which won eight of its final nine to claim its first outright section title in 14 years, will open the postseason close to home. They will face No. 13 Steel Valley (10-7) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands.
Kiski Area will face No. 12 Hempfield (10-9) 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gateway.
Plum, in the playoffs for the fifth straight year, will take on No. 11 Upper St. Clair (10-6) 4 p.m. Tuesday at Woodland Hills.
Burrell (11-5), making its 14th straight playoff trip under coach Mark Spohn, is seeded eighth in Class AA and will face No. 9 Mohawk (11-6) 4 p.m. Tuesday at Butler’s Pullman Park. Burrell was No. 9 last season when it advanced to the title game before losing to Beaver Falls.
Also in Class AA, Freeport (11-4) will take on No. 3 Waynesburg (15-1) 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gateway. Freeport’s softball team plays at 2 p.m. at the same site.
In Class A, No. 11 Leechburg (10-6) will play No. 6 Bentworth (10-4) 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant.
The top seeds are Peters Township (Quad A), Elizabeth Forward (Class AAA), Shady Side Academy (Class AA) and Serra Catholic (Class A).
The championship games will be played over two days — May 31 and June 1 — at Consol Energy Park in Washington.
