Derry Area Middle School names award winners

Derry Area Middle School presented President's Education Awards to students with high academic achievement. Gold award winners include: Charles Arbore, Angel Brown, Jillian Bush, Joshua Campbell, Justin Canzano, Joanna Cappella, Sean Dillon, Elana Dipietro, Yvonne Eaglehouse, Audrey Fleming, Stephanie Flowers, Rebecca Galley, John Geyer, Savanna Goodman, Sarah Gower, John Kuhns, Ashley Lester, Kristen Lester, Jessie Letosky, Michael Machen, Elizabeth McCarthy, John Myers, Amber Okert, Eric Pennesi, Keith Rhea, Christa Rusher, Jeffrey Slezak, Alexis Smith, Jenna Stauffer, Kelly Sylvester, Tara Tatone, Brian Tommasini and Jessica Vought.

Silver award winners are: Megan Arthur, Kate Brodmerkel, Sean Cogan, Amber Dablock, Coletta Derito, Tamara Eldridge, Samuel Emmerling, Carla Flowers, Chelsey Harshell, Laura King, Lisa King, Shelby Kozar, Rebecca McDonald, Ashley Moss, Kelly Nicely, Megan Pfeifer, Nicole Regula, Heather Rhea, Jacob Yacobucci and Chelsea Yarger.


Quindelyn Cook of Greensburg, a junior at Greensburg Salem High School, was granted a scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week at Lycoming College in Williamsport. He is the son of Deborah Cook.


Carrie Holsopple of North Huntingdon Township was named to 'Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges' at Shippensburg University.


Christopher Panichella of Greensburg has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Rochester Institute of Technology. Panichella is studying industrial design. The son of Gary and Rosemary Panichella is a 1999 graduate of Greater Latrobe Senior High School.


Alicia A. Hartz of Mt. Pleasant has been named to the dean's list at the University of Pittsburgh and inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is the daughter of John and Debbie Hartz.


George Stape of Greensburg has been accepted at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for the fall semester. He is the son of George and Diane Stape.


Karim Boudadi of Greensburg and Laura Morton of North Huntingdon Township participated in the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University.

Boudadi, a student at Hempfield Area Senior High School, is the son of Abdelaziz and Michelle Boudadi.

Morton, a student at Norwin High School, is the daughter of David and Cindy Morton.


Dr. Stephen Merckle of Greensburg has completed a residency program in primary eye care and ocular disease at the Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia.

He is the son of James and Kristin Merckle of Greensburg and a 2000 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.


Jessica Oravec, a 2001 graduate of Penn-Trafford High School, has been named the recipient of the Yvonne Torzok Memorial Scholarship by APPLES, the Appalachian Language Educators' Society. She studied Spanish for four years. Oravec will attend James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and major in business and finance.


Heather Dougherty, a 2001 graduate of Norwin High School, will attend the ICM School of Business and Medical Careers in Pittsburgh in the Computer Management Network Engineering Technology program.
