Derry man named supervisor of Adelphoi Village program
Geary Dettling of Derry has been named supervisor of Adelphoi Village's Benet Home Program. He will be responsible for day-to-day supervision of the program.
A 10-year employee of the agency, he had been at Benet as a counselor.
Dettling received bachelor's and master's degrees in theology from Oral Roberts University.
He and his wife, Caryn, are the sons of Geary, Levi and Justin.
Lynn Adamrovich of Acme, a registered nurse at Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, and Marjorie Koski of Greensburg, a registered nurse at Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greensburg, have been named Cameos of Caring awardees by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.
The nurses were selected though a nomination process.
Adamrovich has worked as a nurse on the South medical/surgical unit at Frick for 11 years. Koski, a charge nurse in the coronary care unit, has worked at Westmoreland for 33 years.
Lorin Zimmerman of Latrobe was named associate director of the mental health program at Adelphoi Village.
Zimmerman received a bachelor's degree from Penn State University and a master's degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh.
Jason Alcorn of Mt. Pleasant, Katelyn Domin of Greensburg and Sarah Malanowsky of Latrobe, all students at Westminster College in Lawrence County, attended the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania Leadership Conference at the campus.
Ashley Corder of North Huntingdon Township competed for the title of Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA. Corder, the daughter of Victor and Jan Corder, is a student at Norwin High School.
Erin Marie Bargerstock of Allegheny Township competed for the title of Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA. A sophomore at Kiski Valley Area High School, she is the daughter of Bob and Elaine Bargerstock.
Wendy Lynn of North Huntingdon Township was hired as the new administrative assistant for the humanities and writing popular fiction graduate program at Seton Hill College in Greensburg.
Kim Jefferson of Apollo has been hired as an admissions counselor. Jefferson graduated from Seton Hill in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in marketing-information management and a minor in graphic design.
Benjamin Abel of North Huntington Township and Amber Cole of Madison performed at the annual Intercollegiate Choral Festival at Bloomsburg University. Abel, a music performance major, is a graduate of Norwin High School. Cole, a music education major, is a graduate of Yough High School.
Jennifer Hoffman and Aloysius Leap, both of Greensburg, received Seton Hill College Rising Star scholarships. The scholarship is awarded to graduates of Catholic high schools.
Ernst Sack of Greensburg has been named a commended student in the 2002 National Merit Scholarship program at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He is the son of Hans and Jane Sack.
Jo-Anne Kerr, a teacher at Ligonier Valley High School, participated in the 91st annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English held at the Baltimore Convention Center. Her presentation topic was "Re-creating the Classroom: Linking Literature and the Workplace."
Jessica Keffer of Greensburg was inducted into the Coastal Carolina University's honors program. The university is located in Conway, S.C.
Nick Kozar of Derry, a senior at Derry Area High School, was named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students." He is the son of Edward and Saundra Kozar and grandson of Rose Kozar and the late Edward Kozar Sr.
Thomas Kwaak Jr. of Saltsburg and Carrie Ferrenberg of Pleasant Unity graduated from the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy's Greensburg Campus. Kwaak, a graduate of Derry Area High School, also attended the academy's cosmetology teacher's program. Ferrenberg, a graduate of Greater Latrobe Senior High School, received the top academic student award. She is employed at Holiday Hair Salon.
Tessa Barber of Greensburg has been named a member of the chorus at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster County. Barber, a 2000 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School, is the daughter of Nancy Barber of Greensburg and James Barber of Johnstown.
Erin Wright of Murrysville has been awarded an $850 scholarship from Aid Association for Lutherans for the 2001-2002 school year. Wright, a senior at Thiel College in Mercer County, is the daughter of Jack and Maureen Wright.
Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant appointed new physicians. Joining the associate staff with privileges in emergency medicine are Dr. Robert Whipkey, Dr. William Jenkins, Dr. Ronald Smith and Dr. Scott Harter.
Upon receiving his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Whipkey served both his internship and residency at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. He is board-certified in emergency medicine and is a member of the American and Pennsylvania Colleges of Emergency Physicians.
Board-certified in emergency medicine, Jenkins is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served his internship and residency at UPMC Presbyterian. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, National Association of EMS Physicians, American Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
A graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Smith served his internship at Flint Osteopathic Hospital in Michigan, and did his residency at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, he is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Harter, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, served his internship and residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. A member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, he is board-certified in emergency medicine.
A radiation oncologist, Dr. Harry Katz, joins the Frick consulting staff. A graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, he served his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Medical Center. Certified by the American Board of Radiology, Katz is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Katie Logan of Irwin and Nicholas Falbo of Unity Township were named Outstanding Westmoreland County 4-H members. Both represented the county in the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta in November.
Logan, the daughter of Thomas and Joann Logan, has been working in the 4-H program for the last 10 years. She has served as local club officer, a teacher for younger members and camp counselor for high-risk kids. She has organized community service projects and served on 4-H policy-making committees.
Falbo, the son of Leon and Susan Falbo, is also an outstanding 10-year member of the 4-H. Falbo has been instrumental in introducing llamas to the county and state 4-H level and was key in organizing the first countywide llama club.
The following St. Francis University students received academic scholarships:
Krystal McCracken, Jeremiah Stamm, Jason Stamm and Jodi Torock, all of Latrobe, were honored by the Westmoreland County 4-H program for displaying personal development through commitment to project work, and contributions to the 4-H club and program.
The Kiski Area Marching Band ranked second in Class AA and seventh overall in the nation at the Bands of American Grand National Championships in Indianapolis. Competing against 90 bands from across the country, the band performed "The Shape of Things to Come."
The band also was named Class AA Champion and Bands of American Regional Champion in Ohio, and placed first in Class AA and second overall in the Bands of America Regional Championship in Morgantown, W.Va.
Carrie Wilt of Mt. Pleasant was one of 23 residents who received the Self-Sufficiency Award from the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania.
Wilt received the honor during the association's annual membership conference in Harrisburg. She was nominated by Westmoreland Human Opportunities Inc.
The award recognizes the achievements of community action program participants who overcome socioeconomic barriers to attain independence.
