Dining news: Gus's Cafe opens; Pittsburgh Restaurant Week; Gaby et Jules' macaron sale
Gus's Cafe
Gus's Cafe is now open at 4717 Butler St. in Lawrenceville, with Allegra Fisher serving as executive chef.
The restaurant features “street food and food-truck food,” and will soon expand to a full menu, owner George Haritos says.
The full menu will include burgers, and gyros made of naan and seasoned grass-fed ground beef. The bar features homemade potato chips and fried chick peas as snacks. Gus's is almost entirely gluten-free and will offer pizza, doughnut holes, cakes, crepes, homemade bread and more.
The kitchen is open from 11 to 11 p.m. daily. The bar is open until 2 a.m. weekends.
Gus's also has a program called Stone Soup, in which folks who cannot afford a meal can have a bowl of soup for free. The restaurant will feature a hearty, vegetarian or vegan offering daily. For those who can pay, the cost is $4, with the option of paying more and the balance going to a different charity each month.

Anyone looking forward to Pittsburgh Restaurant Week Winter 2014 can start browsing menus online.
Restaurants have begun submitting their plans for Pittsburgh Restaurant Week Winter 2014 running from Jan. 13 to 19 at more than 50 participating restaurants.
The culinary celebration focuses on highlighting Pittsburgh food and dining across the region as restaurants offer special menus, including three-course fixed-price meals or $20.14 specialty items.

Executive Chef Jason Dalling will host a New Year's Eve Dinner at Habitat at the Fairmont Pittsburgh, 510 Market St., Downtown, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Dec. 31.
The six-course dinner is $125 and features a mix of seasonal dishes and local ingredients, as well as Pastry Chef James Wroblewski's desserts.
• First course includes white sweet-potato-and-ham soup, scallions, soda bread; or red endive, burrata, pumpkin, basil, barley.
• Second course is pounded ahi tuna, chives, prosecco, taro chips; or foie gras tourchon, maple syrup, apple sauce, pickled vegetables.
• Third course is pork cheeks with parsnip cream, mushrooms, sage and spinach puree, broccolini; or celery root with poached greens, potato almond crumble, chestnut apple puree.
• Fourth course is black cod with salsify, celery root puree, porcini, roasted garlic; or salmon, buckwheat potato knish, red onion, dill sauce, creme fraiche.
• Fifth course is aged beef tenderloin with potatoes, red onion, tomato hollandaise; or seared duck breast with caramelized carrot puree, pear saffron chutney, rapinni and apples.
• Dessert is Champagne Tradition — lemon fondant cake, vanilla poached strawberries, champagne gel, violet meringue crisps, mimosa sauce; or Chocolate Resolution — chocolate mousse, coffee brulee, whipped milk chocolate ganache, chicory meringue, spiced mandarin oranges.

Don Draper's Duvet is served warm and is made of white rye whiskey, mulled cider, honey and aromatic bitters. The Griswold has Ginever, sage, maple and cream. The Red Rider features Landlocked Spiced, cranberry, vanilla-bean simple syrup and ginger beer. The Partridge has White Wheat Whiskey, aged rye whiskey, pear and rosemary lavender bitters.

Atria's at PNC Park will host a New Year's Eve party beginning at 8 p.m. and featuring music by The Igniters, a four-course meal and midnight champagne toast.
