The Diocese of Pittsburgh announced today it will merge four inner-city elementary schools into two.

The reorganization will affect Holy Rosary School in Homewood; St. Benedict the Moor in the Hill District; St. James School in Wilkinsburg; and St. Agnes School in the Lower Hill District. Holy Rosary and St. James will merge this fall. St. Benedict the Moor and St. Agnes will merge as soon as 2011-12.

The Rev. Kris Stubna said the Extra Mile Foundation has raised more than $30 million in the past 20 years to subsidize the schools. The parishes associated with each school also support them

In a release, Diocesan officials said the move would "strengthen the viability of Catholic education in the region."
