District justice certified in court system
District Justice Michael Mahady was certified for service as a member of Pennsylvania's Unified Judicial System after successful completion of continuing legal education course work.
Ryan Tepper of Greensburg, a sophomore at Robert Morris College, was named to the dean's list. Tepper is a 1999 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School.
Laura Mihalacki of Mt. Pleasant was named to the dean's list at West Virginia University. She is the daughter of Ed and Janet Mihalacki.
Stephen Macesic of Level Green received his master's degree in geography and regional planning from California University of Pennsylvania. Macesic is employed as a community development planner for Charles County in LaPlata, Md.

Joseph Concannon, Kelly Hallam, Jenna Hungerman, David Muchoney, Timothy Thomas and Meredith Ward of Greensburg; Jason Butler of Harrison City; and James Thompson of Jeannette.
Michele Gornick of Greensburg is working as an intern at Glaxo Smith Kline Pharmaceutical Co. in Philadelphia specializing in DNA research. Gornick will graduate from Penn State University in December 2002 with a degree in microbiology. She is a 1998 graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic High School.
Emily Grobmyer of North Huntingdon Township was awarded a Benjamin Rush Scholarship from Dickinson College in Carlisle. The scholarship, worth $12,000 per year, is awarded to the top freshman applicants. A graduate of Norwin High School, she is the daughter of Louis and Patty Grobmyer.
Dawn Marie Drango of Penn Township graduated from the U.S. Military Academy last month. Drango, a graduate of Penn-Trafford High School, has joined the military police and will attend basic course training for officers at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. She is the daughter of Mark and Lori Drango.
Ellen Petrosky Nasto, the daughter of Charles and Karen Petrosky of Greensburg, was recently promoted to corporate librarian at Harper-Collins Publishers in New York City. Nasto is a 1993 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School and a 1998 graduate of Penn State University.
Cora Jean Black of New Stanton, a member of the National Notary Association, was named as one of the Top 5 of the countries notaries at the organization's annual convention in Montreal.
More than 30 states and eight foreign countries were represented at the conference. Black, who has belonged to the organization since 1964, was one of four honorees on the court of the Notary of the Year.
The National Notary Association is a public service office dedicated to providing documentation for legal matters such as title transfers, wills and deeds.
John T. Bey of Murrysville, a corporal with Pennsylvania State Police Troop A in Kiski Valley, has been promoted to sergeant and transferred to Troop H in York. Bey joined the state police in 1989. Joseph S. Alessandro Jr. of North Huntingdon Township, a trooper with Pennsylvania State Police Troop A in Greensburg, has been promoted to corporal and transferred to Troop B in Uniontown. Alessandro joined the state police in 1988.
Jerome Donnelly of Jeannette was named to 'Who's Who Among Students In American Junior Colleges' at Penn State University. Donnelly is the son of Al and Cheri Donnelly.

Nicole Laskey of Greensburg was named to the spring semester dean's list at Duquesne University. The daughter of Daniel and Judy Laske was also inducted into Phi Eta Sigma and Lambda Sigma honor societies. She is a speech language pathology major.
Jamie and Carolyn Obringer , students at Salem-Teikyo International University in West Virginia, have been named All-American Collegiate Scholars by the United States Achievement Academy. They are the daughters of James and Susan Obringer of Greensburg.
Drew Barnett of Jeannette received a bachelor's degree from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The business administration management major, who is also working toward a minor in history, is a 1997 graduate of Jeannette Senior High School. He is the son of Dennis and Debra Barnett.
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh awarded scholarships for the upcoming fall semester to four Westmoreland County students:
Jennifer Jones of North Huntingdon Township, a student at Norwin Middle School East, was named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. She is the daughter of Wayne and Annette Jones.
The Arc Westmoreland, a not-for-profit agency that provides services to individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities and their families, recently recognized its contributors.
Betsy Kim of Irwin was named Volunteer of the Year. She organizes women of the Larimer and Manor congregations of the United Church of Christ to serve hot lunches to The Arc Westmoreland consumers.
Chartwells Dining Services of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg was recognized as Employer of the Year for their support and generosity of its management and staff. They are under the leadership of Richard McMahon .
Manda Marsolo was honored as Program Participant of the Year. Upon completion of instruction in food services training, she began working as a dietary aide with Redstone Highlands in Greensburg.
Charlotte Legge , a teacher at Franklin Regional Senior High School in Murrysville, was named Educator of the Year for her work with disabled students.
The Community Service Award was given to Dr. Thomas Hower of Greensburg. Hower and his family have hosted a fishing outing for program participants since 1986.
Gregg Kretchun, director of communications and development, was named Outstanding Arc Staff Member. He has been employed by The Arc since 1995 and handles grant writing, public relations, special events and publications.
The Mary Jane Glass Founders Award was given to Mary Drylie of Irwin. She was honored for her longtime support of The Arc and its mission, dating back to 1955.
