Do Marcellus homework
In response to the news story "Marcellus Shale drilling a concern" (May 6 and TribLIVE.com) about the Hallowich family's struggle with health concerns they believe are the result of such drilling, it is good to know that they are taking the time to explain the untold downsides and minor health risks of selling gas rights. However, I hope they are not trying to alienate people who do decide to sign or who work with one of the companies doing the drilling.
My family and I own and operate a farm in Washington County and are recipients of one of these leases. We did the proper research and consulted environmental organizations before deciding to sign up with Range Resources. This was a financial godsend at a time when my mother was forced to retire and I am laid off from work and trying to continue my education.
Although I am concerned about the environment, I believe that the benefits of this drilling heavily outweigh its undeniable negative impacts.
People seriously need to research both sides of the topic and form a well-educated opinion about it.
