Dollar General took over the former Spagnolo's Foodland in Ford City and will have a grand opening Saturday.

Shelves are stocked at the new Dollar General store in Ford City as staff members prepare for the grand opening Saturday with incentives for early bird shoppers.

The discount store at 1500 Fourth Ave. is in the building formerly occupied by Spagnolo’s Foodland. It has been open for regular business hours — 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily — for the last two weeks.

Fran Harmon, assistant manager, said business has been brisk in the days leading up to the grand opening.

“So far, so good. We’re fully stocked and keeping the store open for customers,” she said. “And we’re asking for their input.”

On Saturday, the first 50 shoppers can expect a little extra when the doors open at 8 a.m. Each will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card. The first 200 shoppers will receive tote bags and other giveaways.

A “Now Hiring” sign hangs outside the front doors. Anyone interested in applying for a job should visit the career section at dollargeneral.com, Harmon said.

Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development said in a release that the company is committed to providing a wide variety of merchandise at a good price and in a well-situated spot.

“We hope our Ford City customers will enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location,” Nieser said.

The Dollar General is among more than 11,500 stores in 40 states.

On Tuesday, a steady stream of customers stopped by to check out the deals on everything from food to house wares, health and beauty products, school and pet supplies, seasonal items, cleaning products and clothing.

Janet Chiusano, who lives down the street from the store, said she liked having the option of being able to walk there to shop. “It’s just wonderful,” she said. “It’s very convenient — and the prices are good.”
