Dome agrees to terms with Flames

The Calgary Flames signed former first-round draft pick Robert Dome on Wednesday.

Dome, a 23-year-old forward, was taken 17th overall by the Penguins in the 1997 draft. He had nine goals and eight assists in 39 games in the AHL last season.

Dome became an unrestricted free agent July 1 when the Penguins opted not to give him a qualifying offer.

  • The New York Rangers signed restricted free agent Krzysztof Oliwa , a left wing acquired from the Penguins last month.

  • The Nashville Predators re-signed Andy Delmore , avoiding arbitration with the 25-year-old defenseman. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs signed veteran right-winger Tom Fitzgerald yesterday. Fitzgerald, an unrestricted free agent, had eight goals and 12 assists last year for the Nashville Predators and Chicago Blackhawks.

    BASKETBALL

    The New Jersey Nets increased ticket prices as much as 62.5 percent for some seats, just months after the team ended a stretch of three straight losing seasons by reaching the NBA Finals for the first time. In price lists given to season ticket-holders this week, the team raised prices for all but the cheapest seats at Continental Airlines Arena. The old ticket prices ranged from $25 to $80. Now, a ticket costing $80 last season will cost $125 next season.

  • Former Utah Jazz center Olden Polynice was added by the Toronto Raptors to their roster for the NBA summer league that begins this week at Salt Lake Community College. The 37-year-old Polynice was out of the league last season after he opted out of a $2.4 million option to rejoin the Jazz following 2000-01.

    FOOTBALL

    Nick Calcutta, a college football assistant coach for 19 seasons, was named offensive coordinator of NCAA Division II Clarion University. Calcutta spent the past two seasons as offensive line coach at Division II Savannah State (Ga.). Calcutta, a graduate of Division II Millersville, also has been an assistant at Memphis; Division I-AA Southern Illinois, Howard, Buffalo, Delaware State, Tennessee State, Austin Peay and South Carolina State; and Division II St. Joseph's (Ind.). At Clarion, he replaces Ron Crook , who was named offensive coordinator in the spring before resigning to take a coaching position at Illinois.

    MOTOR SPORTS

    IRL driver Eliseo Salazar , injured four months ago while testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, will race Saturday in the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. Salazar, who drives for A.J. Foyt Racing, was cleared by doctors yesterday. He will drive the No. 11 car, moving Greg Ray into Foyt's

    OLYMPICS

    Washington and San Francisco are front-runners, and New York's stature has declined in the search for the U.S. city that will bid for the 2012 Olympics, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. The U.S. Olympic Committee denied the report.

    SOCCER

    Mercyhurst College named Keith Cammidge men's and women's soccer coach, replacing Austin Daniels , who resigned after discrepancies on his resume were discovered. Daniels had been hired in February by the NCAA Division II school to replace the fired John Melody as men's and women's coach. Cammidge has served 14 years as a Division I head coach at Northeastern, Drexel and North Carolina-Wilmington.

    SOFTBALL

  • Thiel College announced the resignation of JoAnn Gordon as softball coach. Gordon, who also coached the women's volleyball team at the NCAA Division III school, resigned to take over as softball coach at Division I Toledo. She led Thiel to a three-record of 47-53 in softball. In two seasons as volleyball coach, Gordon's record was 18-40.

    TENNIS

    In Umag, Croatia, third-seeded Marcelo Rios , returning to competitive tennis after missing three months with a knee injury, was beaten by Victor Hanescu yesterday in the opening round of the Croatia Open. Rios, a former world No. 1, lost 6-0, 6-4 in the ATP event, losing the first nine games before rallying to 3-3 in the second set. But he failed to convert two break points at 4-4 and went on to the straight-set loss.

  • In Amersfoort, Netherlands, French Open champion Albert Costa bounced back to beat Dutch qualifier Martin Verkerk 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the $381,000 Energis Open.

  • In Oyster Bay, N.Y., Elena Tatarkova , ranked No. 173 in the world, upset top-seeded Laura Granville 6-3, 6-4 yesterday in the first round of the Long Island Classic.
