The Lunch Bunch now sees what Vandergrift residents have been raving about.

Dommy's Pizza, with its signature dough made fresh every day, is a neighborhood gem.

The small shop along Hancock Avenue is unassuming, but once you walk in and smell the dough baking you know you are in for a special treat.

We found several treats during our visit. We placed our order to go so we could share with our colleagues back at the newsroom.

During the car ride back, we nibbled on the soft, warm, fresh-from-the-oven Breadsticks ($3 for six). They had just the right touch of garlic and were brushed lightly with oil without making the sticks greasy.

The Mushroom and Pepperoni Pizzas ($10 for a 12-cut -- or $14.95 for two of them, plus toppings) won over our colleagues, with their fresh dough crust, good sauce, generous cheese and plenty of toppings. The crust is neither too thick or too thin -- it's just right! The mushroom pizza offered nice big chunks of mushrooms you could really taste and there was plenty of cheese on top. Ditto for the pepperoni pizza.

The specialty pizzas really caught our eye. The Kansas City BBQ specialty pizza ($12.50 for a 12-cut) was a meal on a fresh crust! Instead of red sauce, the crust was slathered with just the right amount of sweet and mildly spicy barbecue sauce -- too much would have overpowered the pie. The pizza was loaded with mushrooms, tender chicken strips (or you can get steak), lots of mozzarella cheese, sliced onions and, to set it apart -- french fries. The newsroom welcomed the novelty of this specialty pizza and once they dug in they raved it was even better than they thought it might be.

The Meatball Stromboli ($9.95, large) was a dough envelope stuffed with tiny meatballs, sauce and lots of cheese. We had a new convert to stromboli with this choice. The size of the meatballs meant they were able to stay inside the dough instead of popping out and making a mess.

The Ham and Cheese Hoagie ($6.25 for a 12-inch) received a thumbs up for the ample portions of meat and cheese and lettuce and tomato piled in the fresh, soft hoagie roll.

Dommy's has been in business for 2 years, but the Vandergrift location has had a pizza shop at that site for more than 20 years.
