Hip-hop producer Dr. Dre has donated $1 million of his own money directly to people affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Dre gave the money to the Julia C. Hester House in Houston with instructions to split it among 50 families devastated by the disaster, MTV.com reported Thursday.

"I wanted to be sure that my donation did two things: went directly into the hands of hurricane victims and that it was an amount that could really impact their lives and make a difference," Dre said.
