Relief is available for Penn Township residents dealing with mountains of garbage.

Dumpsters are located at the five volunteer fire departments for residents to dump trash that was supposed to be collected Saturday, said township manager Bruce Light.

Dumpsters were delivered yesterday to the Claridge, Harrison City, Grandview, Level Green and Trafford departments.

Waste Management Inc. has fallen behind in garbage collections after about 65 percent of its trucks were taken out of commission for alleged safety violations discovered during a crackdown by state police, PennDOT and the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Light arranged for the Dumpsters to be delivered to the fire departments after he learned that a pickup scheduled for yesterday 'will not happen until Friday.'

Light said township commissioners have received calls from residents seeking some relief. 'I've driven through the community and have seen a lot of garbage out and about,' Light said. 'We did this as an interim measure to appease residents.'

Waste Management could not be reached Saturday. An answering service said messages could not be delivered until Monday.
