DVDs keeps movie watchers at home

While this summer's U.S. box-office numbers have disappointed Hollywood studios, sales of DVDs have soared. Americans spent an average of 78 hours each watching videos or DVDs last year -- a 53 percent jump since 2002, the Motion Picture Association of America said. In that same period, DVD sales and rentals have soared 677 percent. Half of all U.S. homes with televisions also have a DVD player. With directors like "The Aviator's" Martin Scorsese spending millions of dollars and hundreds of man-hours perfecting the lighting and color of their films, home movie watchers are buying more big screens with high resolution to experience a movie-quality image at home. Some homes are also adding recliners with popcorn and soda holders. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
