It seems Old Man Winter just can't wait.

Meteorologist Terry Parrish, of the National Weather Service in Moon Township, said Westmoreland and Fayette counties would be under a winter weather advisory until 8 p.m. today, with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected to fall in areas of high elevation.

Parrish said less than an inch would come down in lower lying locations.

A combination of low pressure in the atmosphere moving in from the Ohio Valley, cold winds from the northwest and the lingering Hurricane Wilma storm system would be responsible for the snow, Parrish said.

He said temperatures in the mid 30s and 40s would linger throughout the week, with sleet and rain predicted Wednesday and Thursday.

As far as the snow goes, Parrish said it is not unusual to see it this early.

He said snowfall of a tenth of an inch or more has been recorded as early as Oct. 18. That occurred in 1972.

Parrish said the earliest dusting in the region occurred Sept. 23, 1989.
