EAST BRADY -- A $10,000 Community Revitalization grant will help rehabilitate a deteriorating playground in East Brady, according to Rep. Fred McIllhattan.
The playground is located near the football and softball fields at the former East Brady High School. Since the school closed in 1991 the playground has deteriorated and decayed, McIllhattan said. The grant money will be used to retain an landscape architect to develop a site plan and to convert the existing play area into a toddler play area. The total cost of rehabilitating the entire playground is projected at $75,000 to $100,000.
To help raise the needed money for the project the East Brady Playground Committee will hold its Second Annual Bike-A-Thon at 9 a.m., May 13. The event is open to all ages, although children ages 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Prizes will be awarded to those who collect the largest donations. All entrants will be entered into a drawing for a new bicycle donated by Mike Easley.
Meanwhile, McIllhattan said he is working with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to secure state funding for the project. The East Brady Playground Committee has met, planned and held fund raisers for the past two years to improve the community's playground.
