Edwin Niederberger Residence: Swissvale Age: 12 Family: Father, Peter; Mother, Irina; and a brother; Andre Makarov, 21. School: Edwin is a sixth grader in the gifted class of Phyllis Comer at Dickson Intermediate School in Swissvale. Dickson Intermediate is one of three intermediate schools in the Woodland Hills School District. Noteworthy: Edwin tied for third place in the Federal Executive Board African American Heritage Month Committee Art/Essay Contest in the essay category for his essay titled "Is Racism Dead?" He received a $100 savings bond. He was honored Friday at the AAHMC Luncheon at the Pittsburgh Marriot City Center, Downtown. Edwin's essay focused on a period of a few months that he spent in Washington, D.C. In his essay, he described a much higher degree of racial segregation at school and in the community in Washington than that which he experiences at Dickson and in Swissvale. Quote: "Being home again has taught me to appreciate my friends of color even more than I did before I left," Niederberger said.
