EBay launched a Web site Thursday packed with information for consumers who might be thinking twice about junking their old computers.

The Rethink Initiative was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show where the emphasis is on the new but where concerns are growing about hazardous materials contained in computers and other gadgets that are becoming obsolete faster.

There are increasing environmental concerns over heavy metals and other compounds in the electronic guts of computers that could cause contamination if they are simply tossed into a landfill.

The Rethink program, which includes eBay, the Environmental Protection Agency and most major computer companies, is now featured on the popular online auction Web site.

Its content includes tips and contacts for recycling broken computers or donating working machines to charity groups.
